What Measurements Should I Expect From My New Tire Service?

July 2, 2024

You just got a new set of tires and brought your car into the shop for a tire service, and now you're wondering what measurements and specs they'll give you once the job is complete. Getting those vital tire stats ensures your new rubber is mounted and balanced properly. Here's a quick guide to the measurements you should expect from your new tire service.

Tread Depth

The tread depth is the thickness of the tread rubber remaining on your tires. According to Progressive, the technician will measure this in 32nds of an inch, and new tires generally start out with 10/32" to 12/32" of tread. The tread depth will gradually wear down over time. Most experts recommend replacing the tires once they reach 2/32" of remaining tread depth. Jot down the initial measurement from your new tire service so you can monitor how quickly your new treads are wearing down.

Air Pressure

Proper inflation is key to maximizing your tire life and performance. The technician will check and adjust each tire's inflation pressure to the vehicle manufacturer's recommended level. This spec can typically be found in the owner's manual or on a sticker inside the driver's side door jamb. Note the recommended pressure for future reference. You should routinely check inflation to ensure your tires are safe to drive on.

Alignment Specs

Your tire shop will also perform a wheel alignment service when installing new tires. This ensures the tires make even contact with the road. Key alignment measurements they'll check are camber, toe, and caster. According to Testbook, ideal camber value is between -0.5 and -1.5. Camber helps optimize grip when cornering. Toe controls tire feathering and drag. Have them print out the alignment specs so you can tell if the wheels get knocked out of alignment down the road.

Tire Balance

Proper tire balancing keeps the wheel and tire assembly spinning smoothly at high speeds. Out-of-balance tires can cause steering wheel vibration. The tech will spin each wheel or tire on a balancing machine to determine where counterweights need to be placed. Ask for the balance measurements on the service invoice for your records.

With the measurements from your
new tire service in hand, you can keep close tabs on tread depth, inflation pressure, alignment, and balance as you rack up the miles on your fresh rubber. Knowing these key specs means you'll get the maximum life and performance out of one of your car's most important components. You'll also know when it's time to schedule your next new tire service.
